Quotes:
“Christ speaks these words…from the divine depth of the “redemption of the body”.” (TOB 99:4)
“a permanent source of hope that the creation will be set free from the slavery of corruption to enter into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.” (TOB 99:5)
“...opens marriage to the salvific action of God, to the powers flowing “from the redemption of the body,” which help to overcome the consequences of sin and to build the unity of man and woman according to the Creator’s eternal plan.” (TOB 100:2)
“...assign the dignity of every woman as a task to every man”...and “the dignity of every man to every woman”. (TOB 100:6)
“One can say that marriage is the place of the encounter of eros and ethos and of their reciprocal interpenetration in the “heart” of man and woman…” (TOB 101:3)
Marriage “...constitutes the basis of hope for the person, for the man and the woman, for the parents and the children, for the human generations.” (TOB 101:7)
“We find ourselves in the sphere of the great analogy, in which marriage as a sacrament is, on the one hand presupposed and, on the other, rediscovered. It is presupposed as the sacrament of the human “beginning”, united with the mystery of creation. It is rediscovered, by contrast, as the fruit of the spousal love of Christ and the Church, linked with the mystery of redemption.” (TOB 102.1)
Reflection Questions:
- What spoke to your heart most from this episode?
- How would you answer the questions: Who am I? Why am I here?
- Eros is your desire and Ethos is what directs the desire to God (the True, Good, and Beautiful). This is how we experience our Redemption. Do you allow your desires to point you to God?
- Do you believe that God will make it possible for you to have a selfless relationship with your spouse? Are you relying on yourself or on the power of the Holy Spirit?
- Where can you see the graces of the Sacrament of Marriage flowing in your relationship with your spouse and in your family?
- Have you ever considered how every new life brings with it the hope of a new life in Heaven? Pray with this thought that so much more is happening when we have children than what we see in this life.
- Have you included God in your spousal union and decisions regarding conceiving children? If this isn’t something you have considered, see the resources below for more.
- Reflect on what St. Pope John Paul II had to say about marriage in Familiaris Consortio. What do you feel God is wanting you to know?
- Think of a couple you admire. What is it about them that you admire or want to emulate?
- Patty mentioned five ways we can emulate Jesus’ love on the cross. Pray with these and ask the Lord to show you each day how you can implement them in your relationships:
- Christ freely chose to die on the cross
- Christ’s choice was based on knowledge. He knew what he was doing for us.
- Christ’s choice was a total gift of self
- Christ’s gift of self was permanent and the effects go one for eternity.
- Christ’s sacrifice was life giving.
